Wouldn’t it be awesome for one of the most famous (infamous?) authors of our day to raise thousands of dollars in order to encourage you to lose weight?
He did, and I did. 14 pounds, actually. Maybe you did too, but if you didn’t, you missed out (but more on fixing that later). I won $80 on it!
Sure, it’s not Tim’s 20 lbs in a month, but it’s pretty close. (That statistic is a best-case scenario anyway. Please don’t judge your own progress based on that figure.)
How about winning money for it? Bonus!
How I lost the weight
You want me to say I followed slow-carb to a T and lost it all that way. I know you do.
The truth is, I’ve been eating slow-carb for long enough that I don’t rapidly lose weight that way anymore. At first I did, absolutely. But I probably stick to either slow-carb or paleo around 70-80% of the time. It seems that doing it that way keeps me from gaining weight, but it doesn’t let a bunch of weight come off super fast like it would if I would let myself get into the bad habits I had before.
More of the truth is you probably don’t follow it 100% either, but you’d still like to pull it off.
I have to tell you about a secret I found. Actually, Mr. Ferriss told us about it last Christmas in his Android app.
Whenever I want to lose weight quickly, like right now, I follow an intermittent fasting protocol. A guy named Brad Pilon wrote a book about it, and it works.
Aside from intermittent fasting having some great health benefits, it can help gear your body up for some prime fuel burning.
The idea is not not to eat. The idea is to eat at key points in the day to maximize how well you burn fat. The amount of food didn’t really change from day to day (although some days were higher than others), but when I ate did.
I only did some intermittent fasting for the last 2 weeks of the challenge, and most of the weight came off during that time.
I also have to say I learned to appreciate food more. In an odd way, it made me more compassionate to folks who can’t eat whenever they want to. I became more aware of food, and more thankful for it when I was finally able to eat.
Here’s basically what I did:
- The day after my cheat day was a full fast day. All I ate that day was a handful of almonds before bed.
- The day after that was a small lunch at 10am and a large dinner at 6pm.
- The next 3 days were breakfast at 10, lunch at 2, and dinner at 6.
The protocol isn’t difficult to follow, but I wouldn’t call it easy. Give it a try for a week or two and see how you feel. After a few days it’s much easier to handle the withdrawal.

How I won the money
Not only did I lose 14 lbs, but I also won almost $80 doing it!
I’d mentioned a little while ago that Tim Ferriss was setting up a game on DietBet.com. Well, an obscene number of people joined up (well over 600 if not close to 700), and the pot topped $32,000! 5% of the pot went to DietBet (gotta pay the bills somehow) and 10% was donated to I believe a health research program that Tim supports.
The other 85%, though, got divided up between those of us who met our goal of 4% weight loss in 28 days. As a group, we lost over 2 tons. I mean literal tons. The final count was well over 4000 lbs!
