5K Challenges: Hit Me With Your Best Shot

As you may have read on Monday, I’ve completed my first foot race of the year and have already registered for my second one. This one is special to me because it’s a run to benefit the Autism Society of America. My nephew was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome, and I know how hard it’s been for my sister to get him the help he needs especially in school.

The Autism Society’s goal is to make lives better for everyone on the Autism spectrum. They do this by “increasing public awareness about the day-to-day issues faced by people on the spectrum, advocating for appropriate services for individuals across the lifespan, and providing the latest information regarding treatment, education, research and advocacy.”

Between my sister’s family and the couple other folks I know who blog about living with Autism, I know that it’s a much bigger challenge than any of us on the outside can even imagine. I don’t know what it’s like to live with my nephew’s tantrums over his hot chocolate being too hot or someone not answering a “knock-knock” joke with “who’s there”. My guess is most of you don’t either.

That’s why I’m running in this race, and that’s why I’m asking for funds to be raised for this society.

But I want you to make me work for it!

I’ve decide to open this race up for challenges. I don’t want anything stupid like run it in 30 minutes. My quickest 5K to date was 45 minutes, and that was a couple weeks ago. Challenge me to do something with regards to this race, and agree to donate if I complete that challenge.

I reserve the right to say no if I feel like it would harm me more than help me (like if I go for a run again and my foot wants to fall off, I’m going to find other ways to train so having me run 15 miles between now and then might not happen).

But if I’m able, I promise I’ll make my best effort to complete challenges you add in the comments before the race!

  1. Here’s my proposal:

    For every minute 30 seconds you beat your old PR by, I’ll donate 5 bucks. That makes an even 10 bucks per minute. That way you’ll really push yourself to finish and have added motivation during the race.
