Practical Paleo Book Review and Giveaway

After a long wait, I’ve finally got the goods – a review of Diane Sanfilippo’s Practical Paleo and a way for you to win your own copy!

Initial reactions

My very first reaction was, “Holy cow, this is a big book.” I didn’t really know what to expect, but I can say that even if I had expected a recipe book, a paleo guide, or both, the book still exceeded those. I can’t imagine the effort Diane put into it, but I’m certain it was an impressive amount.

Visually, the book is stunning with photos all over of amazing Paleo foods and dishes. There are diagrams where useful, tear-out guides for everything you could possibly need, meal plans, and oh yes – recipes.

What’s in Practical Paleo?

So let’s take a second to break down what you actually get with Practical Paleo:

Background

Like any good book, Diane starts hers with a story about why. She’d been suffering from some physical problems, and eventually she found that eating a Paleo diet alleviated all of her symptoms.

As a result, she explains why food is such an important part in our everyday health. Even on the rare occasions she gets a headache, she can identify the food that did it. What we eat is way more important than we realize.

But instead of just telling us why it worked for her and expecting us to believe it and immediately adopt this way of living, she talks about the whys. There’s an FAQ section that answers questions like:

  • Should I be counting calories?
  • Where will I get carbs without eating grains?
  • Won’t my cholesterol be too high if I eat so many eggs?
  • What’s the best approach to losing body fat?

Guides
Mixed into all of the explanations of why things are they way they are in Paleo, you’ll find several guides for different things:

  • paleo foods
  • paleo pantry
  • fats and oils
  • even poop!

Meal plans
Practical Paleo also has several meal plans for different goals. There’s a plan for:

  • folks with autoimmune conditions
  • fat loss goals
  • multiple sclerosis issues
  • neurological health
  • cancer recovery
  • even athletic performance

Recipes
And finally, 120+ recipes for all your meals, some snacks, even some desserts. Some of my favorite recipes include:

  • saurkraut
  • carrot gingerbread muffins
  • zucchini “pancakes”
  • bacon-wrapped smokey chicken thighs
  • spaghetti squash bolognese
  • nori salmon handroll
  • kale chips
  • and so many more

Wrapping it up

Honestly, if you could only buy one book to sort of own them all, I’d pick up Practical Paleo. It’s not as sciency as Robb Wolf’s The Paleo Solution or the Dallas and Melissa Hartwig’s It Starts With Food, but if you want to know some basic reasons why a paleo diet is your body’s preferred way of eating, why our standard American diet – even the government’s recommendation – is not, and get some great recipes and meal plans all in one package, this is the book for you.
